As with UAVs and satellites, one wonders about local situational awareness. Would the operators thousands of miles away know that Somali pirates just climbed aboard? Is it possible to electrify the hull or something to repel boarders?

LT Rusty

Oh, there's far more interesting things than electrifying the hull, and they're far more effective.

Think about why fishing with dynamite works, and then think about the massive amounts of sound pressure needed for active sonar, and what that will do to a swimmer. Since this will likely have a primary ASW role, you can almost be guaranteed that it will have a nice little sonar capability.

Also, does it really matter if they get on board? It's not like they're going to have any place to go. Hard to hijack it with no crew to threaten ...

Ron Snyder

Sure LT, not like the ragheads are ignorant in how to use explosives.

Feh

They're more likely to motor alongside and shoot an RPG at it, I guess.

LT Rusty

Okay, great, so they blow it up. BFD.

What's going to happen when some guys climb onboard it, though? What're they going to do? There's minimal deck surface, there's not much in the way of a place to hang out topside. One sharp turn and everyone goes flying. Splash-splash-splash as they land in the water, then Yankee-search. Problem solved.

If they just stand off and launch RPG's at it? Well, if they're that close in the first place then you're screwed, but at the same time ... so what? It's not like there's crew in jeopardy.

HalfEmpty

If they are moving say in a flotilla of three, they might well be able to get enough cuts to localize.

Why does it look like a surfaced diesel boat and what will prevent the enemy from coming along side and boarding? Aside from that, they ought to make excellent targets for everything from speed boats to fighter aircraft.

"If they just stand off and launch RPG's at it? Well, if they're that close in the first place then you're screwed, but at the same time ... so what?"

Well, 20 million bucks is one answer. Probably a lot more if they field an operational version.

We don't say "so what" when expensive drones crash just because no crewmen died.
